Description
Open Protocol is an open-ended artistic project that explores how music can function as a dynamic framework and temporal guide for interdisciplinary improvisation.
Rather than relying on traditional notation, the project proposes a different relationship between sound, instruction, and performance. Music—its sonic presence rather than a written score—works together with text-visual scores to create an open structure. This framework provides performers with shared cues of timing, intensity, and progression while leaving space for them to generate movement, interpret sound, and embody musical elements through their own artistic mediums in real time.
Bringing together experimental composition, multimedia performance, and improvisational practice, Open Protocol questions the level of control embedded in conventional musical scores and theatrical scripts. Instead, it seeks a new coexisting language between improvisation and structure, chance and control.
At the core of the project is the concept of a “dynamic auditory instruction score.” Rather than functioning as a fixed script, sound itself becomes a system of instructions. Through atonal textures, contrasting timbres, and evolving sonic gestures, the composer-director creates cues that guide performers’ decisions and interactions.
Each performer interprets these sonic signals through their own medium—movement, sound, object manipulation, or other forms of artistic expression—allowing the performance to unfold as a living composition. Every realization of Open Protocol therefore emerges as a singular “Event”, in which the specific constellation of performers, sounds, and decisions occurs only once.
In this sense, Open Protocol functions less as a finished work than as an expandable protocol: a set of signals, relationships, and conditions that can generate new performances and collaborations. Within this system, control and unpredictability coexist, forming what the project describes as a “structure of uncontrolled order.”
The following sections document the individual Events generated within this evolving framework.
